Memory 20
Being defeated by Naruto in the Chuunin exams.1-2 (significant neutral)
Notes:
-LOEV THIS MEMORY. I will snuggle it and cuddle it and give it ear scritches. :x
-Okay, now seriously. This is the missing piece in Neji's memories that explains how he transitions from bag of dicks to an actual stable, powerful person. It dove tails with this memory, and it gives that memory the context it was lacking. Without it, Neji understood it, but didn't understand how it reached him, and it just didn't make a cohesive narrative to him. This is the missing piece.
-Sudden man-boy-crush on Naruto. Especially that point where Naruto said that Neji wasn't a loser like him. But also the fact that Naruto was able to sympathize with him while at the same time calling his shit.
-Neji didn't really need the change business because he never fully connected with his younger self's fatalism. However, this does resonate with him in terms of what's important to him and what it means to be strong.
-Neji gets a bit if disgust with himself from this. Not out and out self-loathing, but the tools to really see how weak he was and is capable of being. But that also focuses him. I am not going to say this is a free pass to morality. If anything it's more of a shot to resolve and not backing down from what's necessary.
-However, +10 to emotional accessibility. People just became more important to him as a whole, and particularly people who care about, support or believe in him.
-+10 self-sacrificing for those people. Sorry, this doesn't apply to everyone.
-One thing that stands out to Neji (and stands out to me) is how much this is an ideology punch more than a physical one. Neji goes down in ONE HIT. This isn't because he has a glass jaw. It's because he's shaken and processing. That will not happen again. (While Neji doesn't know this, it's something we see in the barrel arc. Neji takes about three levels in glutton for punishment between this and that, and it's clearly the result of this.) After this, if Neji really has something to fight for, he will... probably not stop for anything less than being killed or incapacitated. And he'll be willing to go to that length, if there's a reason for it.
-...That will be a bad mashup with his attitude toward games, for the record. He's not going to put Iolite to self-sacrifice, but... if it seems like self-sacrificing will win, he'll be pretty wiling to go there. Raven will be disappointed. :(
-Gosh, this memory has me excited and happy. Maybe I forgot something? I don't think so, but if I think of it, I'll edit to reflect that.
