Memory 11
Defeating Hinata in the Chuunin prelims. 1-2 (significant neutral)
Notes:
-Huge memory is huge.
-Anyway, this includes all of Neji's POV in there, obviously not Lee or Gai or Kakashi's exposition. The conversation, the fight, Naruto's promise, and returning to the spectators' position.
-Of the memories Neji's gotten so far, this is the one he identifies with the least, even though he has the background that lead to it. He's gotten enough memories of being older, calmer, and more at peace with his family, that while he knows exactly how he felt doing this, exactly what he was thinking, there's a distinct disconnect with who he was then. This is a little strange for him, because he doesn't know what the resolution was. But he knows it happened, and that he was glad that it did.
-JFC, he was an asshole. Like, what an asshole. He was a very angry, petty, and bitter young man, and he's very aware of just how much so. I could talk a lot about where I see Neji's emotional space in this scene, but it would mostly be self-indulgent. The short version is that Neji hits his breaking point when Hinata sees through him and says that he's suffering. And Neji here knows she was absolutely right.
-He appreciates Hinata more now. Now, from his current perspective, he can see how far she's come, and appreciate the change that manifests in this fight.
-THAT SAID, Neji's got a new feel for some of his own capabilities after this. Not his fighting style or powers. He remembers that, and more, since he remembers fighting years down the line as a jounin. So much growth. And not his abilities to read an opponent. Same thing, he remembered that already. What's different in this fight, and really show up in much fewer memories, is 1) his ability and willingness to use emotional attacks, and 2) the BIG one, his ability and willingness to totally own a fight. He's fighting someone of significantly lesser talent at this point, and he totally plays the fight. To the point that people watching think Hinata is controlling it. She seems to be doing everything right, and Neji is... pretty much curbstomping her. In practical terms, it's expanding his understanding of how to take the lead in a fight and control it totally. It also kind of dials back and clarifies blending offense and defense.
-And in conclusion.... Such an asshole.
